Novelcrafter Alternatives

Novelcrafter alternatives by need: offline desktop apps, a codex or story bible, no-AI or AI-first tools, and apps that export EPUB and print PDF.

The main Novelcrafter alternatives are Scrivener, Penpoint, bibisco and Deckle for offline desktop writing, Plottr and Campfire for planning and worldbuilding, and Sudowrite for AI-first drafting. Atticus and Deckle write and format in one app. Authors usually leave Novelcrafter for one of three reasons: it needs an internet connection, it cannot format a book for publication, or they want an app with no AI in it.

Keep a story bible in the Codex

No standards body ranks writing software, so this page ranks nothing. Every Novelcrafter fact comes from novelcrafter.com, read on 20 October 2026. Other vendors' facts come from their own pages, read the same day. Prices are in US dollars as of October 2026.

What Novelcrafter does well

Novelcrafter is a browser-based planning and writing app built around a Codex, with AI tools you can use as much or as little as you like. How each part of it works, from the Plan views to the tiers, is on what Novelcrafter is and how it works.

  • The Codex. Novelcrafter calls it "a wiki that truly keeps track". It holds "characters, places, lore and more", and "automatically keeps track and links them". Its help documents Codex types, aliases, relations, a Mentions tab, progressions and a series codex shared across books.
  • Plan views. Grid, Matrix and Outline views show acts, chapters and scenes. The Matrix tracks "characters and plot elements across scenes".
  • AI workflows, on your terms. The homepage says "You're in control of how much you want to use it." From the Hobbyist tier you connect your own AI key for scene summaries, character extraction and prose generated from scene beats. Artisan adds Workshop chat. Novelcrafter's help says "we currently do not offer any AI model ourselves", so you choose the vendor: OpenAI, Claude, OpenRouter, Groq, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.
  • A real trial. 21 days, "No credit card required, all features unlocked."
  • No lock-in after cancelling. You keep read-only access and can export.
  • Active development. The changelog has entries on 2 and 19 October 2026.

If you plan heavily, write series, and want AI help that pulls from your own story bible, Novelcrafter does that job well. Most alternatives below have no AI at all.

Why authors look for a Novelcrafter alternative

  • No offline mode. "Right now you can only use Novelcrafter with an active internet connection." The page adds that the app "has been designed from the ground up to eventually support an offline mode" and that there is "no ETA".
  • No publication formatting. "As of February 2025, you cannot format your novel within Novelcrafter for publication. You will need to export the manuscript into your program of choice." The page was updated on 31 August 2026 and calls formatting "on our roadmap".
  • Word and Markdown out, no EPUB or PDF. The export help offers "a Word .docx" or Markdown, plus guides for exporting to Scrivener and Atticus.
  • A subscription with no free plan. Scribe is $4 a month, Hobbyist $8, Artisan $14 and Specialist $20. Annual billing is "2 months off". AI use is billed separately by the AI vendor whose key you connect.
  • AI is part of the design. Some authors want an app with no AI features at all, not one where AI is optional. The Scribe tier has no AI features, but the product is built with AI in mind.
  • Browser only. Novelcrafter installs as a web app from Chrome, Edge or Safari. Its help names no native desktop or phone app. Installing it does not make it work offline: Chrome's help on web apps says some "may not work completely without an internet connection", and Novelcrafter's offline page says it needs one.

A local Novelcrafter alternative that works offline

A desktop app stores the manuscript on your own disk and works with no connection. Novelcrafter can run its AI on a local model through Ollama or LM Studio, but the app itself still needs the internet.

Penpoint is the closest match in shape. It is a native desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux with a codex (characters, nestable locations, items), a timeline view, a corkboard, snapshots with compare, and margin comments. It is fully offline with no account, costs $40 once, and says "no AI ever touches your prose." It is a new product: version 1.0.0 shipped in October 2025.

Scrivener is the established offline choice. It costs $59.99 for Mac or Windows, one licence per platform, and iOS is $23.99. It has a Binder, Corkboard, Outliner, Snapshots and targets. Literature & Latte's overview says Compile can "Create Epub and Kindle ebooks", PDF and Word files. The features page still says so, but the macOS release notes record Kindle (.mobi) removed in 3.5.0 (1 October 2025); the Windows version still has it. Novelcrafter publishes its own "Export to Scrivener" guide. The two apps are compared in Novelcrafter vs Scrivener.

bibisco is free in its Community Edition, for Windows, Mac and Linux, and stores everything locally. It covers chapters, scenes, storylines and character development, and exports PDF and DOCX. The Timeline and EPUB export are in the paid Supporters Edition ($69 once), per bibisco's edition comparison, updated 28 February 2026.

Novelcrafter without AI

Novelcrafter works without AI. The Scribe tier, at $4 a month, has no AI features, and on the higher tiers AI runs only when you connect a key. One testimonial on Novelcrafter's homepage says "Even if you don't use AI features (I don't personally)".

What Scribe still lacks is unrelated to AI: it has no offline mode and no publication formatting. If you want an app whose vendor describes no AI features at all, Scrivener, Penpoint, bibisco, Plottr, Atticus and Deckle fit. The vendor-by-vendor detail, including which companies publish a no-AI policy, is in novel writing software without AI.

Novelcrafter alternatives with AI

If AI help is the reason you use Novelcrafter, the nearest alternative is Sudowrite. It calls itself "the non-judgemental AI writing partner you always wanted", with Write, Describe, Expand, Rewrite, Brainstorm and a Story Bible. It runs in the browser with phone companion apps, from $10 a month billed annually ($19 billed monthly, as of October 2026) with monthly AI credits included. Novelcrafter's model is different: you bring your own key and pay the AI vendor directly. Sudowrite's export help names Word files and does not mention EPUB or PDF.

A Novelcrafter Codex alternative

Three alternatives keep a story bible separate from the manuscript.

  • Campfire has 18 worldbuilding modules, including Characters, Maps, Timeline, Magic, Languages, Species and Relationships. Its free plan caps each module, for example 10 characters and 25,000 manuscript words. The full picture is in Campfire Writing alternatives.
  • Plottr is a visual outlining and series-bible tool with character bios, places and 30+ plot templates (the features page figure; the homepage now says 40+). Plottr says drafting is "not what Plottr is built for", so you pair it with a writing app.
  • Deckle's Codex holds characters, locations, items and your own sections, with aliases and a list of the chapters that name each entry.

What Novelcrafter costs over three years

Novelcrafter is a subscription, so the cost grows each year. This table multiplies the published monthly prices by 36. Annual billing ("2 months off") pays for 10 months a year instead of 12.

Plan Three years, billed monthly Three years, billed annually AI included
Novelcrafter Scribe $144 $120 No AI features
Novelcrafter Hobbyist $288 $240 AI with your own key, paid to the AI vendor
Novelcrafter Artisan $504 $420 Adds Workshop chat; AI vendor costs extra
Novelcrafter Specialist $720 $600 Adds collaboration and teams; AI vendor costs extra
Scrivener (Mac or Windows) $59.99 once $59.99 once None mentioned
Penpoint $40 once $40 once None
Atticus $147 once $147 once None mentioned

A one-time price does not always include future major versions. Scrivener's FAQ says "All minor updates are free, but we occasionally release more major updates that are paid-for." Other buy-once apps are compared in writing software with a one-time purchase.

Deckle: an offline app for writing and formatting

Deckle is our app, so weigh this section accordingly.

Deckle is a native desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. A project is a folder on your own disk, holding one .deckle database with the writing, notes and settings, plus research/ and .deckle-assets/ folders. Nothing is stored on a server, and Deckle works offline after activation. It has no generative AI: no AI model, SDK or API appears in its code.

Deckle's Codex is the part a Novelcrafter user will look for first. It has Characters, Locations and Items sections plus any sections you add, entry templates and an image gallery. Each entry takes aliases, and the entry shows the chapters that name it, with a count. A setting, on by default, underlines Codex names in the prose with a card on hover, and the Inspector's Codex tab lists who is In this chapter. The whole Codex exports as a Story bible (PDF) or Story bible (Word).

Deckle's Codex with tabs for Characters, Locations, Items and a custom Lore section, listing a novel's five characters by name. The Codex, with a custom Lore section beside the built-in three

For planning, Deckle has a Binder, an Outliner with a Grid View of index cards and a List view, and a Timeline with plotlines, a to-scale view and a Story order view.

For the last step, it formats the book itself, with 26 built-in style presets, eight trim sizes, drop caps, running heads and a live preview. It exports EPUB (Generic, Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo targets), print PDF and DOCX. The Kindle target writes an EPUB, which KDP accepts for ebooks and converts itself.

Deckle's export window with EPUB chosen and four platform targets offered: Generic EPUB, Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo. One EPUB per store, from the same manuscript

Where Deckle is behind Novelcrafter:

  • No AI tools. If you use AI to summarise scenes or draft from beats, Deckle has nothing to replace them.
  • No browser or phone version. Novelcrafter runs in any supported browser.
  • No collaboration. Novelcrafter's Specialist tier adds co-authoring and teams. Deckle has inline comments only.
  • No Matrix view or series codex. Deckle's Codex belongs to one project.

Deckle is a one-time purchase. To try it, click Take Deckle for a Spin on the screen Deckle opens to. There is no card, no account and no time limit. It opens a sample novel with every screen open to explore, and you can restyle it and export real EPUB, PDF and DOCX files. New writing is capped at about 500 words, and new documents and imports are blocked.

How to move a book out of Novelcrafter

Export a Word file from Novelcrafter, then import it into the new app.

  1. In Novelcrafter, export the novel as "a Word .docx" or as Markdown.
  2. Open the .docx in Word or LibreOffice and check that chapter titles use a heading style. Scrivener, Atticus, Penpoint and Deckle all import Word files, and Deckle splits chapters by heading style.
  3. Codex entries do not travel inside the manuscript file. Copy them across by hand, or keep Novelcrafter open read-only after cancelling while you rebuild them.
  4. Test two chapters first, then import the whole book. The general method is in how to move a manuscript between writing apps.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for offline mode. Novelcrafter's offline page gives no date, and it was last updated in February 2025.
  • Pricing only the subscription. On Hobbyist and above, AI usage is paid to the AI vendor on top of the plan.
  • Planning to format in Novelcrafter. It exports Word and Markdown only, so plan a formatting step: Scrivener, Atticus, Vellum or Deckle.
  • Assuming a no-AI tier is a no-AI app. Scribe has no AI features, and the product around it is still built for AI.
