The main Campfire Writing alternatives are World Anvil for browser worldbuilding, Plottr for outlining and a series bible, and Penpoint and bibisco for an offline story bible. Scrivener is a one-time writing app, Novelcrafter has a Codex with optional AI, and Deckle is a desktop app for writing and formatting. Free options include bibisco Community, Manuskript and yWriter.
No standards body ranks writing software, so this page ranks nothing. Every Campfire fact comes from campfirewriting.com, read on 20 October 2026. Other vendors' facts come from their own pages, read the same day. Prices are in US dollars as of October 2026.
What Campfire Writing does well
Campfire is a writing and worldbuilding platform with an ebook store and reading app attached. How its modules, apps and old Blaze name fit together is explained on what Campfire Writing is.
- Eighteen worldbuilding modules. Manuscript, Characters, Timeline, Maps, Calendar, Encyclopedia, Magic, Languages, Research, Locations, Arcs, Relationships, Items, Species, Cultures, Philosophies, Religions and Systems.
- A free plan. "Campfire is free to sign up for, no credit card required." Each module has a cap, such as 25,000 manuscript words, 10 characters, 20 timeline events and 2 maps.
- Pay only for what you use. Modules can be bought one at a time, by subscription or for life. The Manuscript module alone is $16 a year.
- Browser, desktop and phone. Campfire runs in the browser and has desktop apps for Mac and Windows. The FAQ says "the desktop app allows you to write offline!" The free CF Creators app runs on iOS and Android.
- Collaboration. Invited collaborators can view, comment or edit "so long as they have a free Campfire account".
- Publishing in the same place. You can sell an EPUB through Campfire's own store, with bonus content such as character profiles and maps. Campfire pays "up to 80% royalties" on digital sales, and 40% on sales below $2.99.
- Your work stays yours. "We claim no ownership of anything people create using Campfire." If you change plans, "you'll still be able to read and export your work."
Campfire's pages describe no AI writing feature. Its public statement on AI is covered in does Campfire Writing use AI.
Why authors look for a Campfire Writing alternative
- The cost of the full set. Standard, which includes every module, is $12 a month (shown against $19, the 18 modules bought singly), $99 a year, or $336 for lifetime access. The free plan's caps make elements over the limit read-only.
- The phone app needs a connection. "An internet connection is required to use the app," and the mobile app leaves out some modules, including Arcs, Calendars, Languages, Relationships and Research.
- Some exports need a connection. Elements export to formats such as DOCX, and that needs you online, because Campfire's servers do the conversion.
- Your work lives on Campfire's servers. The FAQ says "We secure everyone's work and back it up with Amazon servers." A full local copy is a manual step: File, then Download Project Backup.
- Print typesetting is not described. Campfire says you can "export it as a PDF or EPUB ready for publication". The pages read for this article do not describe trim sizes or print typesetting controls.

Campfire Writing free alternatives
Free tools cover parts of what Campfire does, and each states its own limit.
- World Anvil's free tier gives 2 worlds, 42 articles, 2 maps and 2 timelines. Its Manuscripts module is not on the free tier, and it needs a connection: "you must be connected to the internet to use it."
- bibisco Community Edition is a free desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux that stores everything locally. It covers chapters, scenes, storylines and character development, and exports PDF and DOCX. The Timeline and EPUB export are in the paid Supporters Edition, per bibisco's edition comparison, updated 28 February 2026.
- Manuskript is free and open source. Its GitHub repository gives the licence as GPL-3.0 and says it "runs on GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows." It needs pandoc for EPUB and pandoc plus LaTeX for PDF.
- yWriter is free on Windows and exports EPUB.
- Campfire's own free plan may be enough for a short project, within its caps.
None of these has Campfire's depth of modules for magic, languages, species and religions.
A Campfire alternative for worldbuilding
World Anvil is the nearest match on worldbuilding. It has article templates, interactive maps, timelines, family trees, a Diplomatic Relations Web and calendars. It is browser only, has no mobile app, and its Manuscripts export is HTML only. World Anvil's FAQ says "we do not train AI models on your work."
Plottr is the choice for structure over world detail. It is a visual outlining and series-bible tool with character bios, places and 30+ plot templates (the features page figure; the homepage now says 40+). Plottr says drafting is "not what Plottr is built for", and its export goes to Word and Scrivener only. Plottr says "We're not building AI into Plottr."
Novelcrafter has a Codex that tracks "characters, places, lore and more" with aliases, relations and a series codex. It is browser only with no offline mode, and it includes optional AI tools that run on your own API key. It is compared in full in Novelcrafter alternatives.
An offline Campfire alternative you buy once
Campfire's desktop app writes offline, but the platform is a subscription or a lifetime purchase. These desktop apps keep the project on your own disk and are sold once.
Penpoint costs $40 once for Windows, Mac and Linux, fully offline with no account. It has a codex of characters, nestable locations and items, a timeline view, a corkboard and snapshots, and says "no AI ever touches your prose." It is a new product, first released in October 2025.
Scrivener costs $59.99 for Mac or Windows, one licence per platform, and iOS is $23.99. It is a writing app first: characters and places are documents made from templates. Literature & Latte's overview says Compile can "Create Epub and Kindle ebooks", PDF and Word files. The features page still says so, but the macOS release notes record Kindle (.mobi) removed in 3.5.0 (1 October 2025); the Windows version still has it.
More buy-once apps are compared in writing software with a one-time purchase.
What Campfire costs over three years
This table uses each vendor's published prices as of October 2026.
| Plan | Three years |
|---|---|
| Campfire Standard, monthly | $432 |
| Campfire Standard, annual | $297 |
| Campfire Standard, lifetime | $336 once |
| Campfire Manuscript module only, annual | $48 |
| World Anvil, from $4.50 a month billed annually | from $162 |
| Plottr desktop | $180 annual, or $150 lifetime |
| Penpoint | $40 once |
| Scrivener (Mac or Windows) | $59.99 once |
Campfire's Standard Lifetime "also includes future modules we may develop and release." A custom lifetime package gets "updates and bug fixes to only the modules you select". Lifetime and annual purchases are refundable within 30 days, and monthly subscriptions are not.
Deckle: writing and formatting on the desktop
Deckle is our app, so weigh this section accordingly.
Deckle is a native desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. A project is a folder on your own disk, holding one .deckle database with the writing, notes and settings, plus research/ and .deckle-assets/ folders. Nothing is stored on a server, and Deckle works offline after activation. It has no generative AI.
For worldbuilding, Deckle has a Codex with Characters, Locations and Items sections, plus any sections you add, such as Magic or Species. Entries take templates, an image gallery and aliases, and each entry lists the chapters that name it. The whole Codex exports as a Story bible (PDF) or Story bible (Word). Deckle's Timeline has plotlines, period markers, optional real calendar dates, a to-scale view and a Story order view, and it can lay out lanes by any Codex category.
The Timeline to scale, one lane per plotline
The difference from Campfire is the last step. Deckle formats the book itself, with 26 built-in style presets, eight trim sizes, bleed, drop caps, running heads and a live preview. It exports EPUB (Generic, Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo targets), print PDF and DOCX. The Kindle target writes an EPUB, a format KDP accepts and converts for Kindle.
EPUB targets for each store
Where Deckle is behind Campfire:
- No maps, languages or relationship webs. Deckle's Codex is a set of entry sections, not 18 purpose-built modules.
- No phone or browser version. Campfire runs in the browser and on iOS and Android.
- No collaboration. Campfire collaborators can edit on a free account. Deckle has inline comments only.
- No store. Campfire sells your EPUB to its readers. Deckle makes the files for you to publish elsewhere.
Deckle is a one-time purchase. To try it, click Take Deckle for a Spin on the screen Deckle opens to. There is no card, no account and no time limit. It opens a sample novel with every screen open to explore, and you can restyle it and export real EPUB, PDF and DOCX files. New writing is capped at about 500 words, and new documents and imports are blocked.
How to move a book out of Campfire
Export the manuscript as an EPUB, then import it into the new app. Every Campfire export format, and what each keeps, is in Campfire Writing export.
- In Campfire, download a full project backup first: File, then Download Project Backup.
- Export the manuscript as EPUB. Campfire exports manuscripts to PDF and EPUB.
- Import the EPUB. Deckle imports EPUB directly. Check the new app's import list first: Scrivener's names Word, plain text and Final Draft files, not EPUB.
- Worldbuilding modules do not travel inside the manuscript. Export the elements you need as DOCX, or copy them into the new app's story bible.
- Test two chapters before moving the whole book. The general method is in how to move a manuscript between writing apps.
