Plottr costs $60 a year or $150 for a lifetime licence, as of October 2026. Subscriptions auto-renew until you cancel.
Every fact below comes from plottr.com and Plottr's help centre, read on 20 October 2026. Prices change, so check the pricing page before buying.
How much does Plottr cost?
Plottr sells three plans, each with up to three ways to pay. All prices are in US dollars.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plottr | Not offered | $60 | $150 |
| Plottr Pro | $9.99 | $99 | $599 |
| Plottr Pro + Community | $14.99 | $129 | $649 |
The pricing page shows a higher figure beside most prices: $80 a year and $199 lifetime for Plottr, $15 a month and $699 lifetime for Pro, and $19 a month, $160 a year and $799 lifetime for Pro + Community. The page does not say how long the lower prices last. That gap is what the "plottr lifetime discount" search is about.
Plottr publishes no education price. Bulk licences and "educational rates" are handled by contacting support for "special pricing".
What each Plottr plan includes
Plottr covers "Unlimited household devices" on Windows and Mac, all basic features, "Work Offline", automatic backups, all upcoming features and "No AI". Files and backups are stored on your device, and sync between devices is manual.
Plottr Pro adds a browser app that works on tablets, cloud sync, cloud backups, "Real-time Collaboration" and sync with the Idea Threads app. Its files are stored in the cloud. Each real-time collaborator needs their own Pro subscription.
Plottr Pro + Community adds a private community and an Education Vault.
The comparison table marks offline use as "(Coming Soon)" under both Pro plans. The plan lists above it say all plans "Work Offline", so the page contradicts itself. Plottr's devices help page notes that Plottr Pro requires an internet connection. As of October 2026, Plottr's changelog (v2026-04-02) refers to an "offline mode beta", and its features page describes Pro Offline Mode as "Edit your existing opened files while offline". If you need to plan offline, the base Plottr plan is the one the page clearly supports.
Is there a Plottr lifetime licence?
Yes. Every plan has a lifetime option: $150 for Plottr, $599 for Pro and $649 for Pro + Community. The pricing FAQ says lifetime plans "never expire", and you get updates and access to your projects "for life". A lifetime licence is a one-time payment, not a subscription.
On the base plan, the lifetime licence costs as much as two and a half years of the yearly plan.
What happens when a Plottr subscription ends?
The answer depends on the plan.
- Plottr. After expiry you can keep using Plottr, but you stop getting updates and bug fixes.
- Plottr Pro and Pro + Community. After expiry you lose updates and access to your projects unless you renew. Plottr recommends exporting your projects before that happens.
Plottr exports to Microsoft Word and Scrivener, covering the outline, notes, characters and places. It has no PDF or EPUB export. The steps are in Plottr's exporting help article, and a Scrivener round trip is covered in Plottr vs Scrivener.
How to cancel a Plottr subscription
Plottr subscriptions auto-renew. The pricing FAQ says all subscriptions are auto-renewing and that Plottr is "not able to turn that off". You stop the renewal by cancelling.
- Sign in to your account on plottr.com.
- Open the subscriptions section of your purchase history page.
- Click Cancel (one help article calls it Cancel my subscription) and follow the prompt.
Your subscription "will remain active through the end of your current billing cycle", and "You won't be charged again unless you manually renew." The pricing page adds that there are no prorated refunds for unused time. You can also contact Plottr support to cancel at any time.
If you upgraded from Plottr to Pro, cancel the old plan as well. The help centre notes that upgrading does not automatically cancel the original subscription.
Does Plottr offer refunds?
No. The help centre says "We do not offer refunds" and points to the 30-day free trial instead. The pricing page says the same, and offers coaching instead. If you can't outline your book in under a week after installing, using a template and watching the tutorials, Plottr will coach you personally for up to five hours.
Use the 30 days as the test. Build one full outline from a template, export it to Word, and check what comes out before you pay.
Is Plottr free?
No. Plottr has no free plan. The pricing FAQ says you can "try out Plottr for free for 30 long days."
Free tools that cover some of the same ground, such as bibisco, Manuskript and yWriter, are compared in Plottr alternatives.
Plottr cost over three years compared
List prices from each vendor's own page, as of October 2026, in US dollars before tax. Subscriptions are multiplied out at the price shown. One-time prices assume no paid upgrade, though Literature & Latte's Scrivener FAQ says it "occasionally" releases major updates that are paid for. Scrivener's $59.99 is the same on the Mac App Store.
| Setup | Price model | Paid at purchase | Total through year 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plottr, lifetime | One-time | $150 | $150 |
| Plottr, yearly | Subscription | $60 | $180 |
| Plottr Pro, yearly | Subscription | $99 | $297 |
| Plottr Pro, monthly | Subscription | $9.99 | $359.64 |
| Plottr Pro + Community, yearly | Subscription | $129 | $387 |
| Plottr Pro + Community, monthly | Subscription | $14.99 | $539.64 |
| Plottr Pro, lifetime | One-time | $599 | $599 |
| Scrivener, one platform | One-time | $59.99 | $59.99 |
| Plottr lifetime plus Scrivener | One-time each | $209.99 | $209.99 |
| bibisco Supporters | One-time (two years of updates) | $69 | $69 |
| Dabble Writer, billed annually | Subscription | $180 | $540 |
On the base plan, the lifetime licence costs less than the yearly plan by the third year. On Pro, the lifetime licence pays off later: $599 against $297 for three years of yearly billing. Plottr is a planning tool, so most authors also pay for a writing app. Plottr says it is not built for drafting and recommends "doing the bulk of your writing in a program designed for it." Other price models across the field are in writing software one-time purchase.
Is Plottr worth it?
Plottr is worth it if you plan before you write and use its visual timeline and plot templates, and it has committed to no AI (which other apps share that stance is on novel writing software without AI). It does not draft, format or export PDF or EPUB, so most authors pay for a writing app too; the full verdict is in Is Plottr worth it?.
How Deckle's price model compares
Deckle is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. Deckle is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that drafts, organises and formats a book. It is a one-time purchase with every update included, not a subscription, and the price is on the Deckle shop. A licence covers two devices in any mix of Windows, Mac and Linux, and Deckle refunds within 30 days.
For planning, Deckle has a Timeline with plotlines, events you drag along the axis, periods, optional calendar dates and a "Story order" view with a column per chapter. Its Outliner has a Grid View of index cards and a List view, and its Codex holds characters, locations and items.
Deckle's Timeline can pull events in from the chapters already written
Deckle has no plot-structure templates, no series view, no web app, no sync and no collaboration, all of which Plottr offers on some plan. It is compared with Scrivener on Scrivener vs Deckle.
To try it, click Take Deckle for a Spin on the screen Deckle opens to. There is no card, no account and no time limit. It opens a sample novel with every screen open to explore, and you can restyle it and export real EPUB, PDF and DOCX files. New writing is capped at about 500 words, and new documents and imports are blocked.
