The main Dabble Writer alternatives are Scrivener (a one-time desktop app), Plottr (plotting only), Novlr and Reedsy Studio (browser apps with free plans), and Atticus (writing plus formatting). Free desktop tools include bibisco, Manuskript and yWriter, and Deckle is a desktop app for writing and formatting. Authors usually leave Dabble to stop paying a subscription, or to get the EPUB and print PDF files Dabble does not make.
No standards body ranks writing software, so this page ranks nothing. Every competitor fact comes from the vendor's own pages, read on 20 October 2026, and prices are in US dollars as of October 2026.
What Dabble does well
Dabble is a cloud-synced writing and plotting app, and these are the things a replacement has to match.
- Sync across every device. Dabble keeps "a full copy of your novel" on each device and another in the cloud, and "Sync is real-time across every device signed in to your account." Edits made on two devices at once "are combined automatically."
- Browser, desktop and phone. Dabble has desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux (an AppImage), runs in any modern browser, and installs on iPhone, iPad, Android and Chromebook from the browser.
- Real offline writing. "As you type, each change saves straight to your device before anything reaches the server." There is "no 'sync now' button and no 'work offline' switch."
- The Plot Grid. "A Plot Grid works like a spreadsheet for your story." Columns are plot lines, cards are plot points, and a grid linked to a book has one row per scene, so reordering scenes reorders the grid.
- Co-authoring and editing. Writing partners edit "live". The Author plan adds comments, track changes, sticky notes, grammar and style checks, and Read to Me.
- No generative AI. Dabble's help says "Dabble will never put words on the page for you" and "Your writing is never sent to a generative model."
- A trial with every feature. 14 days, every feature from every plan, no credit card.
If you write on a phone, a laptop and a work computer in the same week, or with a co-author, Dabble does that job well. Most alternatives below do not sync in real time.
Why authors look for a Dabble alternative
- No EPUB or print PDF. Dabble's export help says "Dabble does not export PDF or ePub directly." For a PDF, "you use Print and save as PDF", and the print view "is just your document as plain, printable text" at 12pt. Exports go to Word, Google Docs, the web or Markdown, one book at a time.
- It is a subscription. Writer is $15 a month billed annually ($180 a year), or $19 billed monthly. A one-time payment exists only as Lifetime Author at $699 or Lifetime Bestseller at $899. The full breakdown is in Dabble Writer price.
- An account and a connection to sign in. Dabble's system requirements list "a Dabble account, and an internet connection to sign in and sync." Writing works offline after that.
- No Scrivener import. Dabble imports Word, Markdown, HTML and RTF up to 50 MB. Its import help does not mention Scrivener, and "Imported words don't count toward your word-count goals or stats."
- No app store app. "Looking for Dabble in the App Store? You won't find it there, and that's on purpose." Phones run it as a home-screen web app.

A one-time alternative to Dabble
Three alternatives sell a licence you pay for once.
Scrivener costs $59.99 for Mac or Windows, one licence per platform. iOS is $23.99 and sold separately. Minor updates are free, and Literature & Latte says it "occasionally" releases major updates that are paid for. It has a Binder, Snapshots and writing targets, and its Compile makes EPUB, PDF and Word files, plus Kindle (.mobi) on Windows only, since Scrivener for Mac 3.5.0 (1 October 2025) removed it. Its features page also lists a Corkboard of index cards and an Outliner, and says to "sync using Dropbox or transfer with iTunes". The two apps are compared in full in Scrivener vs Dabble.
Atticus costs $147 once, with updates included, and runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook and in the browser as a web app. It writes and formats, exporting EPUB, print-ready PDF and DOCX, and it added collaboration in December 2024. It lists no plot grid, story bible or timeline.
Deckle is a one-time purchase, covered below. Other one-time options are listed in writing software with a one-time purchase.
A Dabble Writer free alternative
- Reedsy Studio is free in the browser, with paid add-ons at $4.99 and $7.99 a month. Its pricing page puts PDF and EPUB export in the free plan. It exports EPUB 3 and a print-ready PDF, and it has real-time collaboration with comments and tracked changes. Asked about offline use, Reedsy answers "Currently, no".
- Novlr's free plan holds 2 projects in the browser. Novlr says "We do not have AI built into our platform."
- Campfire's free plan caps the manuscript at 25,000 words and the other modules at small counts.
- bibisco Community Edition is a free desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux that stores everything locally. It exports PDF and DOCX. EPUB export, the Timeline and writing goals are in the paid Supporters Edition, per bibisco's edition comparison, updated 28 February 2026.
- Manuskript is free and open source (GPL-3.0). It needs pandoc for EPUB and pandoc plus LaTeX for PDF, and its download page says it is "still in the early development stages".
- yWriter is free on Windows and exports EPUB.
- Google Docs is free, syncs and collaborates like Dabble, and exports .docx, .pdf and .epub. It includes Gemini generative AI on some paid plans.
None of the free desktop tools sync between devices on their own.
A Plot Grid alternative: Plottr
Plottr is the closest match to Dabble's Plot Grid. It is a visual outlining tool with drag-and-drop timelines, character bios, places, series planning and 30+ plot templates (the features page figure; the homepage now says 40+). Plottr says drafting is "not what Plottr is built for", so authors pair it with a writing app. It exports to Word and Scrivener, not EPUB or PDF.
Plottr costs $60 a year or $150 lifetime for the desktop app. Plottr Pro, which adds the web app, cloud sync and real-time collaboration, costs $9.99 a month, $99 a year or $599 lifetime. Plottr says "We're not building AI into Plottr."
If you want Dabble's AI-free promise
Dabble, Scrivener, Plottr, Novlr, bibisco and Deckle list no generative AI. Novelcrafter and LivingWriter, two other cloud writing apps, both have generative AI features. The no-AI options are compared in novel writing software without AI.
Deckle: writing, organising and formatting on the desktop
Deckle is our app, so weigh this section accordingly.
Deckle is a native desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. A project is a folder on your own disk, holding one .deckle database for the writing, notes and settings, plus research/ and .deckle-assets/ folders. It works offline after activation.
For organising, Deckle has a Binder (Draft, Research, Trash), an Outliner with a Grid View of index cards and a List view, and a Codex for characters, locations and items. It also has a Timeline with plotlines and a "Story order" view, inline comments, snapshots, and Writing Stats with a manuscript target, deadline, goals and streaks.
The difference from Dabble is the last step. Deckle formats the book itself, with 26 built-in style presets, eight trim sizes, drop caps and running heads, and exports EPUB (Generic, Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo targets), a print PDF and DOCX. The Kindle target writes an EPUB, which KDP accepts as an ebook manuscript and converts. It has no generative AI.
One EPUB for every store, or one built for each
Where Deckle is behind Dabble:
- No cloud sync. Files are local. Dabble syncs every device in real time.
- No phone, tablet or browser version. Dabble runs on all three.
- No co-authoring or track changes. Deckle has inline comments only.
- No Plot Grid. Deckle's Timeline shows plotlines as lanes, which is a different tool.
Deckle is a one-time purchase. To try it, click Take Deckle for a Spin on the screen Deckle opens to. There is no card, no account and no time limit. It opens a sample novel with every screen open to explore, and you can restyle it and export real EPUB, PDF and DOCX files. New writing is capped at about 500 words, and new documents and imports are blocked. The full comparison is in Dabble vs Deckle.
What you'd lose by leaving Dabble
| Dabble feature | What the alternatives offer |
|---|---|
| Real-time sync on every device | Scrivener syncs through Dropbox. Plottr Pro and Google Docs sync. bibisco, Manuskript, yWriter and Deckle are local only. |
| Phones and tablets | Scrivener has an iOS app. Reedsy, Novlr and Google Docs run in mobile browsers. Deckle has none. |
| Live co-authoring and track changes | Reedsy Studio and Google Docs have both. Atticus has collaboration. Scrivener and Deckle list none. |
| The Plot Grid | Plottr is the nearest match. Scrivener's Corkboard and Deckle's Outliner Grid View are index cards, not a grid of plot lines. |
| A goal that "builds the daily plan" | Scrivener has session targets. Deckle has a manuscript target with a deadline. |
| No generative AI | Scrivener, Plottr, Novlr, bibisco and Deckle match it. Novelcrafter, LivingWriter and Google Docs do not. |
How to move a book out of Dabble
Export Word from Dabble, then import it into the new tool. Dabble exports one book at a time to Word in two styles. "Manuscript Format is the standard submission format: indented paragraphs, double spacing, Times New Roman 12pt." "Dabble Format uses your in-app formatting." Scrivener, Atticus and Deckle all import Word files. Dabble's export help describes the manuscript only, so check what you need from the Plot Grid and Story Notes before you leave.
Deckle splits a Word file into chapters by heading style, so check that chapter titles are headings before you import. Test two chapters first, using the method in how to move a manuscript between writing apps.

FAQ
What is the best Dabble Writer alternative?
Nothing authoritative ranks writing software. Scrivener suits a one-time desktop app, Plottr suits plotting, Reedsy Studio suits a free browser tool, and Atticus or Deckle suit writing and formatting in one app.
Is there a free alternative to Dabble Writer?
Yes. Reedsy Studio, Google Docs, bibisco Community, Manuskript and yWriter are free. Novlr and Campfire have capped free plans.
Is there a Dabble alternative without a subscription?
Scrivener ($59.99 per platform), Atticus ($147) and Deckle are one-time purchases. Dabble's own one-time option is Lifetime Author at $699.
Which Dabble alternative has a plot grid?
Plottr is the nearest match. It is an outlining tool, not a drafting app.
Can Dabble export EPUB or a print PDF?
No. Dabble says it "does not export PDF or ePub directly." It exports Word, Google Docs, web and Markdown, and makes a plain PDF through browser print.
Is there a Dabble alternative that works offline?
Scrivener, bibisco, Manuskript, yWriter and Deckle work offline. Atticus says it works "with or without an internet connection", though its help (last updated 14 February 2024) says you must be online to import and export. Dabble also writes offline and syncs when you reconnect.
Does Dabble use AI?
No. Dabble's help says it will "never put words on the page for you", and its pricing page says any future AI features will be "strictly opt-in."
