Yes. Reedsy Studio is free to write, format and export a book. Reedsy says "Every function that you need to write and format a book in Reedsy Studio is free, and always will be." Two optional add-ons cost money as of October 2026: Craft at $4.99 a month and Outline at $7.99 a month. The only condition on the free formatter is a copyright page that acknowledges Reedsy.
Every fact below comes from Reedsy's own pages, read on 20 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars before tax.
What is free in Reedsy Studio?
The free plan, which Reedsy's pricing page calls Standard, writes and typesets a whole book. Reedsy's Studio page says "Studio's core writing and formatting features are completely free."
The free plan includes:
- Unlimited books and unlimited devices, in any web browser.
- Writing tools: chapters, scenes, front and back matter, "One manuscript goal" and a "30-day writing history".
- Boards for notes, characters and research, "limited to card view".
- Public previews (read-only) to share with readers.
- Formatting: three templates (Reedsy, Classic and Romance), four trim sizes, and an automatically generated copyright page and table of contents.
- Exports: "EPUB 3 (which works great on all major ebook stores)" and "PDF (PDF/X-1a:2001 for print-on-demand)". KDP's manuscript guidance says "PDF/X-1a is preferred".
- A Word backup through Manage ▸ Exports ▸ Back Up, which emails you a download link.
The free plan has no offline mode. Reedsy says it plans "to make offline use a paid feature in the future", which is covered in does Reedsy Studio work offline.
Is Reedsy Book Editor free?
Yes. "Reedsy Book Editor" is the name many people still search for. Reedsy's current pages call the app Reedsy Studio, and Reedsy's FAQ still sends you to editor.reedsy.com to "sign up and access it for free." Everything on this page applies to it.
What do the Reedsy Studio add-ons cost?
Reedsy sells two add-ons, billed monthly or annually, as of October 2026.
| Add-on | Price | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Craft | $4.99/month | "Unlimited history", "Advanced stats", "Custom goals", "Daily check-ins", "Dark mode" |
| Outline | $7.99/month | "Unlimited Boards", "Unlimited Notes with Attributes", "Writing Templates (characters, locations, narrative devices, etc.)", "Pinned notes", "Dark mode" |
Annual billing shows "Save 10%" on the pricing page, but Reedsy publishes no annual dollar amounts. Neither add-on changes the formatting, the templates or the export files.
Reedsy's own pages use different names for the same add-ons. The FAQ says "Craft and Outline". The pricing page says "Craft add-on" and "Outlining add-on". The Studio page says "Studio Essential ($4.99/month) or Outlining ($7.99/month)". The prices match, so these are the same two products.
Is there a Reedsy Studio free trial?
Yes, for the add-ons. The pricing page says "Try all our add-ons for 30 days". Reedsy's Studio page says the trial has "no credit card required." When it ends, the pricing page says "you'll lose access to both Craft and Outline unless you enter your credit card details." The free core stays free either way.
You can cancel a paid add-on at any time and keep it until the end of the billing period. Reedsy says notes' relationships and attributes made with an add-on stay available in "read-only mode" after it ends.
What does Reedsy Studio cost over three years?
| Path | Per month | Total through year 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Free core only | $0 | $0 |
| Craft, monthly | $4.99 | $179.64 |
| Outline, monthly | $7.99 | $287.64 |
| Craft and Outline, monthly | $12.98 | $467.28 |
These use the monthly price, because Reedsy does not show the annual one. An annual plan would cost less by the 10% Reedsy states.
For comparison, the one-time prices of other book tools, as of October 2026, from each vendor's own page:
| Tool | Price model | Cost over 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Scrivener, Mac or Windows | one-time | $59.99 |
| Atticus | one-time | $147.00 |
| Vellum Ebooks / Vellum Press (Mac only) | one-time | $199.99 / $249.99 |
| Deckle | one-time | see the free demo first |
Scrivener is a writing and organising app, and Literature & Latte does not describe its PDF as professionally typeset. Vellum states dozens of configurable styles and 24 trim sizes. The trade-offs are on Reedsy Studio vs Scrivener and Reedsy Studio vs Vellum.
What is the catch with free Reedsy Studio?
Reedsy names one requirement. Its help says "the copyright page can not be disabled. It includes a small acknowledgment of our Studio app and is the only requirement we have for authors to use this free formatting tool."
The other limits are about control, not money. They apply to paid users too, because no add-on changes the formatting.
| Topic | Reedsy's words |
|---|---|
| Font size | "You may choose small, medium, or large for your book's font size... we do not offer any other size or style customization at this time." |
| Images | "All images added will be sized in the same way and cannot be adjusted." |
| Chapter titles | "you can not remove chapter titles" |
| Templates | Three: Reedsy, Classic and Romance |
| Trim sizes | Trade 6 x 9", Digest 5.5 x 8.5", Reedsy standard 5 x 8", Pocket 4.25 x 6.87" |
| Offline | "Currently, no." |
The Pocket size is not among the paperback trim sizes on KDP's Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins page, so check it with your printer first. What a KDP print file needs is in KDP print file requirements.
Is Reedsy Studio worth paying for?
The free core is enough to write and publish a book; Craft adds unlimited version history and custom goals, and Outline adds more than card view for Boards. The full verdict is in Is Reedsy Studio worth it?, and tools for more design control or offline writing are on Reedsy Studio alternatives.
A one-time desktop alternative
Deckle is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. Deckle is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is a one-time purchase, with every update included and no add-ons. It works offline after activation, and a project is a folder on your own disk.
It includes what Reedsy sells as add-ons: snapshots under Inspector ▸ Versions, Writing Stats with daily or weekly goals, streaks and a heatmap, and a Codex story bible.
Goals and sprints in Deckle's Writing Stats, with no add-on It has 26 built-in style presets, uploaded fonts and eight trim sizes. Its Copyright page is a Binder document you can edit or delete.
Where Deckle is behind: it is not free, it has no collaboration or browser version, and its print PDF is a standard PDF, not PDF/X-1a. The full comparison is on Reedsy Studio vs Deckle.
Deckle has a free demo. Click Take Deckle for a Spin on the screen Deckle opens to. There is no card, no account and no time limit. It opens a sample novel with every screen open to explore, and you can restyle it and export real EPUB, PDF and DOCX files. New writing is capped at about 500 words, and new documents and imports are blocked.
