No. Reedsy Studio does not work offline. Asked "Can I access Studio offline?", Reedsy's Studio FAQ answers "Currently, no. This is a feature that is on our roadmap, though." Another Reedsy page says "you can only access Studio through an online browser, though we plan to make offline use a paid feature in the future." There is no desktop download.
Every fact below comes from Reedsy's own pages, terms and privacy policy, read on 20 October 2026.
Is Reedsy Studio an app you can download?
No. Reedsy's help answers "No, it's not a downloadable app." It says Studio "can be accessed only when logged into your Reedsy account on a browser." There is no Reedsy Studio download for Windows or Mac.
Reedsy's Studio page adds that it "doesn't currently offer a dedicated mobile app", and that "our platform is fully accessible through mobile web browsers on any smartphone or tablet". You can add Studio to a phone's home screen from the browser menu with Add to Home Screen. That is a shortcut to the website, and Reedsy does not say it works without a connection.
What happens if my internet drops while writing in Reedsy Studio?
Reedsy's pages do not say. Its FAQ, Studio, pricing and help pages describe no offline cache, no local copy and no rule for text typed while the connection is down. Treat Studio as needing a connection for every session, and keep your own copy of the book (next section).
Reedsy's Studio terms are clear about who carries the risk. They exclude liability for "loss of any User Content posted or uploaded to our website." They also reserve the right to "suspend or terminate access to Reedsy Studio at any time and for any reason."
How to keep an offline copy of a Reedsy Studio book
Reedsy Studio gives you three files you can keep on your own computer.
- A Word backup. Go to your Bookshelf, hover over the book and click Manage. Click Exports, scroll to the bottom and click Back Up. Reedsy emails a link to download the manuscript as a Word file.
- An EPUB. Studio exports "EPUB 3 (which works great on all major ebook stores)".
- A print PDF. Studio exports "PDF (PDF/X-1a:2001 for print-on-demand)", plus a second PDF for reading on screen.
The Word backup is the one to edit in another program. The EPUB and PDF are finished books. Save a fresh Word backup after each long writing session, because version history in the free plan covers 30 days. Moving that Word file into another app is covered in how to move a manuscript between writing apps.
Is Reedsy Studio private?
Your book is stored online by Reedsy, not as a file on your computer. Reedsy's terms say you keep ownership, and that it will not train AI on your writing.
Ownership. The Studio terms say "You will remain at all times the owner of your own content." Reedsy's FAQ answers "Will my work be used to train AI?" with "No. We guarantee that your works, your books, and your words are your own."
AI training. The Studio terms say "we shall not make use of any of your User Content for the purpose of training AI models (or similar)." Reedsy's FAQ says "We will never use it to train AI. Nor did we build Reedsy Studio for that purpose."
The licence you give Reedsy. To provide Studio, the terms grant Reedsy "a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to reproduce and display you User Content on our website", for your own use and for the people you choose to share it with. Reedsy "may store and maintain electronic files of your User Content" until "you delete, or inform us of your wish to delete, such content."
Where it is stored. The privacy policy says "Our servers are situated in the EEA and all of the information that we collect about you will be stored on these servers." It adds that "In certain circumstances your information may be processed outside of the European Economic Area (EEA)". It says Reedsy will "collect information that you upload or post to Reedsy". The policy on reedsy.com shows no last-updated date.
Security. The privacy policy says "We use appropriate technological and operational security measures to protect your information". It names no specific measure.
Who else can see it. Collaborators you invite see the manuscript, and Reedsy notes that "any person you invite will have full edit rights on the manuscript". Public previews are "read-only".
Reedsy Limited is registered in England under company number 08841985.
Does Reedsy Studio use AI?
Reedsy lists no AI writing tools in Studio. Its FAQ and Studio terms both say your work will not be used to train AI, as quoted above.
Reedsy Studio alternatives that work offline
Each of these runs without a connection, from each vendor's own pages, as of October 2026.
- Scrivener is a desktop app for macOS and Windows, with an iOS app, at $59.99 one-time per platform, per Literature & Latte's overview. It writes and organises, as compared in Reedsy Studio vs Scrivener.
- Atticus says "Work online, offline, in a plane or on a train", at $147 one-time. Its help centre (last updated 14 February 2024) says "You do need to be online to import and export files".
- Vellum is a Mac-only formatting app, from $199.99 one-time.
- Kindle Create is Amazon's free desktop formatter for Windows and macOS.
The wider list, with prices and design control, is on Reedsy Studio alternatives.
A desktop app that keeps the book on your disk
Deckle is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. Deckle is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. It needs a connection once to activate, then writes, formats and exports with no connection. The licence check runs on your computer.
A Deckle project is a folder wherever you choose to put it. It holds one .deckle SQLite database with all the writing, notes and settings, plus research/ and .deckle-assets/ folders. Nothing is stored on a Deckle server. Deckle goes online only for activation, update checks and fetching a web page into Research when you ask. It makes zip backups to a "Project Name Backups" folder in Downloads, falling back to Desktop or Documents. It keeps 20 by default and makes one on close and every 500 words, as Deckle backups describes.
Deckle's backup settings
Deckle has no generative AI anywhere in the app.
It imports the Word backup and the EPUB that Reedsy Studio gives you. Where Deckle is behind Reedsy: it has no collaboration, no browser or phone version and no cloud sync, and its print PDF is a standard PDF, not PDF/X-1a. The full comparison is on Reedsy Studio vs Deckle.
Deckle has a free demo. Click Take Deckle for a Spin on the screen Deckle opens to. There is no card, no account and no time limit. It opens a sample novel with every screen open to explore, and you can restyle it and export real EPUB, PDF and DOCX files. New writing is capped at about 500 words, and new documents and imports are blocked.
