Footnotes & Endnotes in Deckle

Insert a note with one tool, and decide later whether your whole manuscript renders it as a footnote or an endnote. Switching styles doesn't mean re-inserting anything. See citing sources in non-fiction for a full citation workflow.

What You Can Do

• Insert a footnote/endnote from the toolbar or a keyboard shortcut, in the main editor, a popout, or Scrivenings.
• Write rich content inside a note: bold, italic, and links, not just plain text.
• Choose Footnotes or Endnotes as one global style for the whole manuscript (Styles → Special Pages → Notes).
• Click directly on an existing note to reopen and edit it.

How to Insert a Footnote or Endnote

1. Place your cursor where you want the reference.
2. Click the footnote toolbar button, or press Ctrl+Shift+F (Cmd+Shift+F on Mac).
3. Write the note's content. Formatting and links work the same as anywhere else in your manuscript.
4. Choose Footnote or Endnote style once, in Styles → Special Pages → Notes. It applies to every note in the book.

Footnote vs. Endnote Rendering

• Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page in PDF/print, and as a same-file popup/jump note in EPUB.
• Endnotes are collected onto one dedicated page at the end of the book, in both PDF and EPUB, with a backlink from each entry to exactly where it was referenced in the text.

A Couple of Things Worth Knowing

💡 The Footnote/Endnote choice is one global setting, not per-note. Every note in your manuscript follows whichever style is currently set: there's no mixing the two within one book.

💡 Note content supports real formatting, including bold, italic, and links. It's not a plain-text-only box.

💡 The exact same tool and shortcut work in all three editing surfaces: the main editor, a popout, and Scrivenings.
