Setting Up a Comfortable Writing Environment in Deckle

The right combination of theme, text settings, and screen real estate makes a real difference over a long writing session, and every piece of it lives in one place, not scattered across several menus.

Step-by-Step

1. Pick a theme that suits your lighting. A dark theme (Manuscript Dark, Midnight, or Sanctuary) is easier on the eyes in low light; a light one (Manuscript Light, Ink & Quill, Library) tends to read better in bright rooms. If none of the six built-in options feel right, build a custom one from a single seed color instead.
2. Adjust the editor's text size, width, and line spacing in Settings → Editor until a paragraph reads comfortably at your normal sitting distance. The built-in preview text updates live as you change each setting.
3. Turn on typewriter scrolling if you want your cursor to stay vertically centered as you type, instead of pinned near the bottom of the screen. It only applies in single-pane editor mode.
4. Set your Focus Mode width separately from your normal editor width. It's a distinct setting specifically for how wide the text column is when Focus Mode is active.
5. Try a custom background image behind the editor canvas if a plain background isn't the atmosphere you want.

Common Mistakes

• Assuming typewriter scrolling works in split-pane view. It's single-pane only. If you're not seeing the effect, check whether you've got more than one pane open.
• Confusing Focus Mode width with your regular editor's text width. They're two separate settings; changing one doesn't touch the other.
• Forgetting changes save as you make them. There's no separate "apply" step. Closing Settings normally (X, clicking outside, Escape) keeps whatever you just set; only the explicit Cancel button reverts it.
