Special Block Styling in Deckle

Give each special content type in your manuscript (subheadings, block quotes, verse, letters, in-story documents, and more) its own distinct look, independent of your body text.

What You Can Do

• Style seven block types independently: Subheading, Blockquote, Attribution, Verse, Written Note, Conversation, and Inset Block.
• Set font family, size, and alignment for each, plus italic, bold, and small caps toggles (automatically disabled if your chosen font doesn't support them).
• Add spacing above and below, and optional rules above or below, for blocks like subheadings that benefit from visual separation.

How to Style a Special Block Type

1. Open Styles and select the Special Blocks category.
2. Pick a block type from the sidebar: Subheading, Blockquote, Attribution, Verse, Written Note, Conversation, or Inset Block.
3. Set its font, size, and alignment, then italic/bold/small caps as needed.
4. Add spacing and rules above/below if you want extra visual separation, useful for subheadings especially.

The 7 Special Block Types

• Subheading: section headings within a chapter, below the chapter title itself.
• Blockquote: quoted material set apart from body text.
• Attribution: the credit line under a quote or epigraph.
• Verse: poetry or song lyrics, formatted differently from prose.
• Written Note: in-story documents like letters or notes your characters write.
• Conversation: formatted dialogue exchanges, like texts or chat logs.
• Inset Block: general-purpose set-apart text that doesn't fit the other categories.

A Couple of Things Worth Knowing

💡 Italic and bold toggles disable automatically if your chosen font doesn't include that variant, rather than faking a bold or italic style Deckle doesn't actually have for that font.

💡 Rules above/below only make sense for some block types (like Subheading) and are entirely optional. Leave them off for a plainer look.
