How to Calculate Spine Width

Spine width is page count multiplied by paper thickness. Why the figure depends on your printer's stock, and why the cover must wait for the interior.

Spine width is the page count multiplied by the thickness of a single sheet. That thickness, called the caliper or PPI, depends on the paper stock your printer uses, so the same 300-page book has a different spine on cream paper than on white.

The consequence that catches people out: you cannot finish your cover until the interior is final, because a single added page changes the spine.

The Calculation

spine width = page count x paper caliper

Page count means the total physical pages, not sheets and not the highest printed folio. A 300-page book has 300 pages regardless of how many carry a visible number.

Caliper is per page and is small. A typical value is around 0.0022 inches, so a 300-page book gives roughly 0.66 inches of spine.

Printers publish their own caliper figures per stock, and they differ enough to matter. Cream paper is usually bulkier than white, and heavier stock is thicker again. Always use your printer's number for the exact paper you have selected, not a generic one.

Some printers express the same thing as PPI, pages per inch. That is the reciprocal: a stock of 500 PPI means 500 pages make an inch, so the caliper is 1/500 = 0.002 inches. Both describe the same property.

Why the Interior Must Be Final First

Spine width depends on page count, and page count is not stable until the interior is done. Several things move it late:

A spine that is even slightly wrong is visible: the front cover artwork wraps onto the spine, or the spine text sits off centre.

Text on the Spine

Printers impose a minimum page count before they will print anything on the spine at all, because a thin spine cannot hold legible text and the wrap tolerance swamps it. The threshold varies by printer and is typically around a hundred pages.

Below that, the spine is left blank. This is also the one case where printers accept deliberate padding: IngramSpark's user guide asks publishers not to pad blank pages "unless required to meet the page minimum for spine text".

Two things follow from that. First, it is an estimate: if your printer publishes a caliper for your chosen paper, use theirs, because cream and white stock differ. Second, it depends on Deckle's estimated page count, which is exact only once you have exported the final interior.

The workflow that avoids rework: finish the interior, export the print PDF, take the real page count from that, then calculate the spine and build the cover.
