Scene Break Styling in Deckle

Mark the gaps between scenes with exactly the visual style you want, from simple whitespace to a custom ornament image, applied consistently across your whole manuscript.

What You Can Do

• Choose from six scene break styles: whitespace only, asterisks ( *), an asterism (⁂), a fleuron (❧), em dashes (— — —), or a fully custom image.
• Upload your own PNG, JPG, or SVG as a scene break ornament, with a text fallback for formats where an image can't render.
• Control vertical spacing, letter tracking, and ornament size independently.

How to Change Scene Break Style

1. Open Styles and select the Scene Breaks category.
2. Choose a style from the dropdown: Whitespace, Asterisks, Asterism, Fleuron, Em Dashes, or Custom.
3. If you chose Custom, upload an image and set a fallback glyph for formats that can't display it.
4. Adjust vertical spacing, letter tracking, and ornament size to taste.

Choosing a Scene Break Style

• Whitespace: the most minimal option: just extra space between scenes, no symbol.
• Asterisks / Asterism / Fleuron / Em dashes: classic typographic scene-break marks, each with a different visual weight and feel.
• Custom: your own uploaded image, for a fully bespoke look (with a text fallback for anywhere the image can't display).

A Couple of Things Worth Knowing

💡 Switching away from Custom clears your custom image settings. If you switch scene break styles and come back to Custom later, you'll need to re-upload.

💡 The fallback glyph for a Custom scene break matters. It's what displays anywhere your uploaded image can't render, so it's worth setting even if you're using an image everywhere else. See Typography for the body-text settings scene breaks sit alongside.
