Fantasy names, invented terms, and technical vocabulary all get flagged by spellcheck the first time. The point of a personal dictionary is making sure that's the last time, too.
What You'll Need
- Spellcheck enabled, in your chosen language, under Settings → General.
Step-by-Step
- Right-click any underlined word in the editor to open the spellcheck menu.
- Choose the right action for the word:
- If it's a genuine typo, click one of the up-to-5 suggestions to fix it in place.
- If it's spelled correctly but Deckle doesn't recognize it (a character's name, a made-up word, a technical term), click Add "[word]" to Dictionary.
- If you just don't want to see it flagged right now but aren't sure you want it permanently added, click Ignore instead.
- Know that Add to Dictionary is a one-time action per word. Once added, that word stops being flagged in every project you open on this installation, not just the one you added it from.
- Remember Ignore doesn't survive a restart. If a word keeps coming back as flagged after closing and reopening Deckle, it means you used Ignore, not Add to Dictionary, last time. Add it properly if you want it to stick.
Common Mistakes
- Using Ignore for character names or recurring invented words. Ignore resets every time you restart the app, so you'll end up repeating the same click every session. Use Add to Dictionary for anything that recurs.
- Expecting a personal dictionary to be separate per book. It isn't. Words you add are recognized across every project on your installation, which matters if you write in more than one series with different invented vocabularies.
- Assuming a word needs re-adding after switching spellcheck language. Your personal dictionary is independent of which language dictionary is currently active; it's checked alongside whichever language you've selected.
FAQ
Why does the same word keep getting flagged every time I open Deckle?
You're likely using "Ignore," which only lasts for the current session. Use "Add to Dictionary" instead for anything you want permanently recognized.
If I add a fantasy character's name to my dictionary while writing Book 1, will it be recognized in Book 2?
Yes, your personal dictionary applies across every project on your installation, not just the one you added the word from.
Can I remove a word I accidentally added to my dictionary?
There's currently no in-app option to remove a word once added. Treat Add to Dictionary as a one-way "never flag this again" action, and use Ignore instead if you're not sure you want that yet.
