Anything in the Binder can go inside a chapter, a Part or a folder. You do it by dragging: where on a row you let go decides whether the page goes inside that row or next to it.
What You'll Need
- The Binder open (the panel on the left).
Step-by-Step
- Add a new scene inside a chapter. Right-click the chapter and choose Add Scene. The new scene appears indented under the chapter, which means it is inside it. Right-click it and choose Rename to name it.
- Drag an existing scene into a chapter. Drag the scene onto the middle of the chapter's name. The chapter's row lights up with an arrow on its right; let go and the scene moves inside it, after any scenes already there.
- Put it between two others instead. Drag onto the top or bottom edge of a row. A line appears between the rows instead of the highlight, and the page lands where the line is.
- Take a scene back out of a chapter. Drag it to the top edge of a chapter row, between two chapters. It now sits level with the chapters. A scene on its own has no heading in the finished book, so if it should start a chapter, right-click it and choose Convert To → Chapter.
- Move a chapter to another Part. Drag the chapter between two of the other Part's chapters, or onto the middle of the Part's name to put it last. Its scenes come with it.
- Move several at once. Ctrl+click (Cmd+click on a Mac) each page you want, then drag any one of them. They all move together and keep their order.
- Drop into a closed chapter. Hold the dragged page over the middle of a closed chapter, Part or folder for a moment and it opens, so you can see where it will land.
- Group chapters in a folder. Right-click a Part (or a chapter) and choose Add Folder, then drag chapters onto it. A folder with nothing of its own is only a grouping: the chapters inside it still export as chapters.
- Research nests the same way. Drag a research document onto one of your Research folders to file it there.
Common Mistakes
- Dropping on the edge when you meant the middle. If a line appears, the page is going next to the row, not inside it. Move toward the middle of the row until the row itself lights up.
- Leaving a scene outside any chapter. It still exports, but with no heading or number. Put it inside a chapter, or convert it to a chapter.
- Dragging into Notes. Notes can't be dropped into from the Draft. Notes never become part of the book.
FAQ
Can a chapter have its own text and scenes inside it?
Yes. Its scenes follow on in the same chapter, separated by your scene break.
Can I undo a move?
Drag it back. Every move is saved as soon as you let go.
Does nesting change the chapter numbers?
Chapters are numbered in the order they appear in the Draft, so moving a chapter renumbers the ones around it. Scenes are never numbered.
